The Beauty Of Bagan...

Myanmar
il 4-5 novembre

The day began with an oxcart ride and a morning spent visiting temples; over 2,000 monuments remain in all shapes, sizes, and states of preservation/disrepair covering an area of 16 square miles and giving the countryside an almost fairytale feeling. Bagan was once the center of the Pagan Empire, becoming a base of power in the mid 9th century under King Anawratha, who unified the country under Theravada Buddhism. The city, as the capital of the Kingdom of Pagan, became a spiritual, as well as political, stronghold and during the height of its power between the 11th and 13th centuries, over 10,000 Buddhist temples, pagodas, stupas, and monasteries were built in the plains.

Our exploration started with the Ananda Temple, built during the reign of King Kyanzittha (1084-1113) and one of the four surviving temples from this period. Titled the “Westminster Abbey of Burma”, Ananda is considered to be an architectural wonder…and that it is.

Local shopping at the open market in Bagan. Many towns in Myanmar have no or spotty electricity so refrigeration isn't always available; hence, fresh food needs to be purchased daily.
