The Darkness Of Nordkap...

Il 17 dicembre
ms Trollfjord

I woke up very early this morning; well, it was more like the middle of the night, but not seeing a sunrise in a week, it's sometimes hard to know what time it is, unless I check my watch. I wandered about the decks and how peaceful it was with no one about; a chance to take a deep breath and reflect on the blessings of this trip. We docked in Honningsvag at 11:30, where it was darker than dusk and a light coating of snow covered the ground, and boarded buses for the drive to North Cape, the northernmost point in Europe. The ride was through a barren wilderness of pristine snow-covered hills and mountains. Scattered about were vacant homes that are occupied only during the summer months when the country is bathed in sunlight for 20 hours or so daily. By the time we arrived at our destination an hour later, it was dark and with each passing minute, I had the sense of being in a forbidden wilderness; probably so because for the last section of the ride, the buses were required to be in a caravan led by a snowplow so help would be immediately available in case of an emergency. It was eerie, surreal, and serene all at the same time...and quite a thrill.
