The
Sacred Valley, Peru
A
flight to Cuzco and a bus ride to the Sacred Valley where the air is
clear and crisp and the altitude is high. Surrounded by the Andes
Mountains-undulating green from the recent rains and with a calm,
quiet beauty, we
are taking our altitude sickness medication and drinking coca tea,
freshly brewed and always available in the hotel lobby. We're at the
Casa Andina Private Collection, amid an abundance of flowers and
foliage and with a couple of local animal friends. The Sacred Valley is a
wonderfully fertile area growing corn, wheat, and potatoes. Within
the country, over 3,000 types of potatoes are grown...impressive,
although a bit less than the 6,000 types grown in the time of the
Inca. We have been advised to relax a bit and "take it slow" to allow our bodies time to adjust to the altitude and the thin air.
Our first day of touring begins with a visit to the town of Ollantaytambo, the location of a remarkable fortress built by the Incas, featuring six enormous rectangular monoliths that form the Temple of the Sun. Then it's on to Chicheria to sample chicha, the maize beer that is the typical alcoholic drink in the Andes, followed by a lunch of Peruvian delicacies, and a weaving demonstration where the alpaca shopping begins!
