Auckland,
New Zealand
Home
to one-third of the country's population, Auckland is New Zealand's
largest city and its former capital. Here, the concentration of
Polynesians is the greatest in the world and the city's ethnic
diversity makes for a fascinating blend of Asian and Western
cultures. Surrounded by volcanic cones, the isthmus of Auckland was
actually created by the eruption of 60 volcanoes that began 150,000
years ago. Mount Eden is the city's highest natural point at 643 feet
high, but “pales” in comparative height to the city's Sky Tower,
the highest point in the city at more than 1,076 feet. I was very
grateful for this edifice because it was not far from our hotel and
thus proved to be a welcoming landmark for me when I took off on my
own and got “a little lost”...I could always see it as it
beckoned me back!
