Viviers And An Organ Concert...

Viviers, France
May 31

Viviers, a small walled city on the right bank of the Rhône, is comfortably posed between the river and the surrounding mountain with its stone walls and cathedral dominating the plain.Traces still remain of a past Roman presence, although the church began playing a major part in the economic and social life of Viviers in the 5th century. Control of the city changed hands over the years; the merchants and lawyers reflected a period of bourgeois success and, during the Renaissance, there was a shift to those most successful business people who had the means to attain power. This period saw the building of an episcopal palace and ornate mansions; the architecture and carvings are a treat for the eye.

La Cathédrale Saint-Vincent...and a glorious concert

A large statue of the Madonna stands on a hill outside the town.
