Riga,
Latvia
July
11-13, 2014
After a
day of riding on tree-lined roads, lush and green and hiding the
terror of war and occupation, and an emotional stop at Camp Nine, a
Nazi “holding camp” for Jews before they were lined up against a
brick wall and shot, we arrived in the Latvian capital. The days in
Riga were delightful; an international music festival was underway
and groups from near and far, young and not so young, had come to
perform; music and dance were everywhere and the air was filled with
sounds, laughter, and much clapping. The city is replete with
stunning architectural facades, trees and parks galore, a sense of
urban sophistication, and a healthy dose of Latvian nationalism.
Wonderful food and drink, a glorious organ concert, a visit to the Riga Market, Old Town, the Riga Castle,a walk in the
park, a boat ride, and shopping for amber jewelry with Peggy, my new
friend, all made for happy memories. And of much added personal
importance was my visit to the local synagogue and a time for
reflection and prayer.
