Two Weeks On The Rhine...

M/S River Voyager
May 8-21

And another adventure begins…daily stops at charming towns with half-timbered houses, cobblestone streets and lots of fountains, intriguing sights to see, local foods to eat and wine to drink, and significant landmarks in Germany's history from Roman to Medieval to Renaissance to the 20th century stain of the Holocaust.

Cologne
The 4th largest city in Germany, a major university town, and home to one of Europe's largest cathedrals

Cochem
A town of narrow streets and winding alleys, restored half-timbered houses, medieval town gates, and located in the "most romantic part" of the Moselle Valley with delightful Riesling wines

Ruins of the Reichsburg Castle in Cochem

The Moselle Valley...forests, meadows, fields, and vineyards

Bernkastel
On the banks of the Moselle and in the center of the vineyards
Michael's Fountain...in the middle of the Market Square

Half-timbered house built in 1416
A traditional old "Moselle-style" winegrower's house, the tall attic was used for storing food and was a place for pets.

Ruins of Landshut Castle

The Moselle Valley as seen from the ruins of Landshut Castle

Plaques in the ground with the names of just a few of the Jews deported from Bernkastel during the war and killed in the Holocaust. I had to search for any reminder of the war as this was a topic not mentioned by our local guides unless I asked.

Trier
The oldest city in Germany and the only Roman imperial residence north of the Alps; home to the Porta Nigra (Black Gate), a fortified  gateway dating from the 2nd century A.D.and the largest Roman structure on German soil

Entrance to the Amphitheater

Boppard
A peaceful waterfront park, picturesque architecture, a former synagogue that is now an optical shop, and Roman and medieval ruins that are the remains of a 2,000 year history
